Reproduce the exact mobile problem, identify the element causing it, and make the smallest relevant layout change. Check the result at narrow, intermediate, and desktop widths, then use a real phone. A broad “make it mobile-friendly” prompt can change more than necessary and still miss the original failure.
What should you record before asking AI for a fix?
Save the page address and version, browser, device or viewport width, orientation, screenshot, and steps needed to reproduce the problem. Describe the result you expected: “The service cards should stack without moving the whole page sideways” is a useful requirement.
Try to find where the problem begins by narrowing the browser gradually. A layout may work at one phone preset and fail at a slightly wider size. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation calls emulation an approximation, so use it to investigate and finish with a real-device check.
Ask for diagnosis before a redesign. Keep approved wording, colors, links, and customer workflows unless changing them is part of the problem. Our small-change publishing workflow explains how to review and release the repair.
Why does the whole page scroll sideways?
Look for something wider than its available space: a fixed-width container, an image with unsuitable sizing, a long unbroken address, a row that cannot wrap, or a child element with a large minimum width. Inspect the element that protrudes rather than guessing from the page’s overall appearance.
- Images: constrain media to its container while preserving useful proportions.
- Long text: allow appropriate wrapping for URLs or other unbroken strings.
- Flex or grid children: inspect minimum sizes and whether the child is allowed to shrink.
- Spacing: check whether width, padding, gaps, or positioned elements exceed the available area.
MDN explains how automatic minimum widths can follow content size and how overflow-wrap handles otherwise unbreakable text. These are possible causes and targeted tools, not instructions to apply one rule to every element.
A blanket rule that hides horizontal overflow can conceal the symptom and cut off usable content. MDN’s overflow reference distinguishes clipping from fixing the underlying size. Keep all required information reachable after the repair.
Why do cards or headings become cramped?
A desktop layout may keep too many columns when there is no longer room for readable text. Let the content determine when to stack or reorganize. Do not assume a layout is complete because it has rules for one named phone size and one desktop size.
For overlapping text, inspect fixed heights, absolute positioning, and no-wrap rules. A heading that wraps onto a third line needs space below it. Shortening accurate copy solely to fit a rigid box can hide the underlying layout problem.
MDN’s responsive design guidance covers flexible layouts, media, and content-driven breakpoints. Ask the implementation to accommodate realistic longer text, enlarged text, and a reasonable range of widths.
Also check the page’s viewport metadata so mobile browsers use the intended device width. Avoid disabling zoom to make the layout appear stable; the page should remain usable when a visitor enlarges it.
Why does the main image look wrong on a phone?
A wide photograph may need a different crop in a narrow container. Identify the important subject and decide whether the image should remain fully visible or fill a cropped area. Adjust the focal point or provide an appropriate alternate crop instead of stretching the image.
Responsive image sources can reduce unnecessary downloads, while picture-based art direction can supply a more useful crop. Those are separate choices: a smaller file does not automatically fix a poorly framed subject.
Preserve meaningful text and calls to action as page content rather than baking them into an image that becomes unreadable on a phone. Use the website image and video checklist when the issue also involves loading speed.
What if the menu or form looks right but is hard to use?
Test interaction states, not just the initial screenshot. Open the menu, follow a link, return, close it, and repeat. Check that visible navigation is reachable with a keyboard and that the control’s expanded state matches what appears on screen.
The W3C disclosure navigation example demonstrates buttons and expanded-state handling for ordinary site navigation. Its examples still require testing before production. A colloquial “menu” does not mean standard navigation needs application-style ARIA menu roles.
For a form, focus a field on an actual phone so the keyboard appears. Check the field, validation message, and submit control. Fixed headers, sticky bars, or overlays can cover controls when the visible viewport changes. Confirm that scrolling can reveal the active field and next action.
For broader keyboard, labeling, contrast, and zoom checks, use the accessibility checklist. A repaired layout is one part of usability and does not establish complete accessibility conformance.
What should you ask AI to change?
A focused mobile repair brief
On the Services page at a 375-pixel viewport, the second service card pushes the page sideways. Find the element and CSS rule causing the overflow. Preserve the approved copy, colors, links, desktop layout, and form behavior. Make the smallest suitable fix, explain the changed files, and test narrow, intermediate, and desktop widths. Do not remove content or hide the overflow to make the screenshot fit.
Replace the page, width, and symptom with your own observed result. A specific width is a reproduction detail, not the only screen size the repair must support.
Review the explanation and changed files. If the patch rewrites unrelated sections or introduces a new library for a small spacing issue, ask why that scope is necessary. Keep a known working version and test the preview before approving publication.
How do you know the repair worked?
- Repeat the original steps at the width where the failure appeared.
- Check nearby widths, portrait and landscape, and a desktop window.
- Confirm there is no unintended sideways page scrolling and no missing content.
- Read long headings and inspect image proportions and focal points.
- Open and close navigation repeatedly; test its links and keyboard use.
- Complete the form with the phone keyboard open and verify the result.
- Check enlarged text, then repeat essential tests on the actual published address.
Record the tested version and any remaining limitation. The full launch checklist covers business facts, integrations, and customer outcomes beyond this layout repair.
