ChatGPT, GitHub & Cloudflare vs. Wix and Squarespace: Which Should You Choose?

Compare the editing experience, ongoing responsibilities, and migration limits that matter after the website launches.

Choose ChatGPT, GitHub, and Cloudflare when you want a code-based website and are willing to learn its publishing and maintenance workflow. Choose Wix or Squarespace when visual editing and an integrated platform fit how you want to work. Both approaches can serve a simple business website. The better choice depends on who will update it, which features it needs, and what you expect to move later.

This comparison is about the practical choice between a self-managed AI-assisted static website and a hosted visual builder. If you are primarily deciding whether to hire a developer, start with our broader custom website versus website builder article.

These are two different ways to own the daily work

In the three-tool workflow, ChatGPT or a suitable AI coding environment assists with project files, GitHub stores the source and changes, and Cloudflare publishes the website. You connect the pieces and verify the result. ChatGPT is not the hosting account, and a GitHub repository is not the same thing as a live website.

Wix and Squarespace combine their editors, hosting, and platform services. They also offer AI-assisted features; using AI is not exclusive to custom code. The useful distinction is whether you want to maintain a project and its integrations or work primarily inside a platform's editor and supported features.

Design control comes with review responsibility

A code-based project gives you room to shape layouts, interactions, and reusable components around the business. That flexibility is useful when the design or workflow has specific requirements. It also means you need to check that AI-generated changes are responsive, accessible, accurate, and maintainable.

A visual builder can make ordinary text, image, and layout edits more approachable for someone who wants to see changes directly. It can be a practical choice when several nontechnical staff members will update the site. Test the actual editor and the changes you expect to make, rather than choosing from a polished demo alone.

Account ownership and portability are separate questions

For either route, the business should know who controls the domain, website account, billing, email, and recovery methods. Agree on access and handoff if a designer helps. Owning your text and photos does not necessarily mean the complete platform implementation can run somewhere else.

In a GitHub-based project, keep source and important configuration in accounts the business can access. A static build may be portable, but moving hosts can require adapting server functions, secrets, forms, redirects, or storage. Budget for testing on the replacement host. Private repository visibility is an access decision, not proof that the business owns every licensed asset or service.

Wix explains that its sites depend on Wix technology and must operate on its servers; an externally registered domain can still be connected. Squarespace offers a limited content export, not a complete export of every design and feature. A later move may involve rebuilding parts of the site.

Neither approach earns rankings by itself

Both routes can support clear page titles, useful service content, internal links, readable mobile layouts, and indexable pages. The question is whether those basics are implemented correctly and whether the website answers the customer's actual question. Custom code can contain errors; a builder's available SEO controls still need thoughtful use.

Google's SEO Starter Guide focuses on helping search systems and people understand content. Review the live site's URLs, metadata, content, and navigation, whichever platform you choose. No platform choice guarantees rankings, leads, or selection in AI-generated answers.

Who fixes it on an ordinary Tuesday?

Imagine you need to change a service price and then discover the inquiry form is failing. In the code workflow, can you make a focused change, review a preview, publish the correct branch, inspect the form's delivery service, and recover a working version? In a builder, can you find the relevant editor, integration settings, and support route?

For the custom workflow, plan source backups, account access, dependency updates where applicable, and checks after deployment. For a builder, plan content maintenance, connected-app reviews, account recovery, renewals, and form checks. Vendor-operated hosting reduces some infrastructure work; it does not verify the accuracy of your prices or that a lead reached the right person.

Compare the one-time and ongoing costs of the three-tool workflow with the current Wix plans and Squarespace plans. Compare renewal periods and the features you actually need, including email and integrations. Include your own time and any hired support.

A simple service site is different from an application

A business that needs service descriptions, work examples, a service area, and quote requests may fit a static site well. A business that frequently edits a large catalog, sells products, manages appointments, or gives customers accounts should evaluate those operational needs first.

A static site can connect to external booking or commerce services, but payments, permissions, customer data, email, refunds, and integration failures still need a plan. A platform's built-in features may reduce setup work when they match your requirements. A custom application may be appropriate when they do not. Use our booking versus quote-request guide and store versus catalog guide to refine the scope.

Choose by the work you want to keep

  • Choose the AI-assisted source workflow if you want a code-based site, can follow technical steps, and will review and maintain the result.
  • Choose a visual builder if editor convenience and integrated features suit the business and you accept its plan and portability limits.
  • Hire professional development if you want someone to plan and implement the website, especially when migration or integrations need careful coordination.
  • Arrange ongoing management if you already have a website and want a defined person responsible for agreed updates and technical support.
